There are records that document a voice, and then there are records where a voice documents itself — where the tape finally caught up to what a human being actually contained.

January 1967. Aretha Franklin was twenty-four years old and three thousand miles from home, inside FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama — a town that had no business producing the sounds it was producing. She had spent nearly a decade at Columbia, making polished, restrained albums that her producer John Hammond believed in but that somehow kept her talent at arm's length. Jerry Wexler at Atlantic knew better. He drove her south.

What Muscle Shoals Did

FAME was Rick Hall's operation — a small, improbable studio on the wrong side of the tracks where the Swampers, a house band of young white session players from the Deep South, had developed a feel that defied easy categorization. Funky without being slick. Soulful without being performative. Drummer Roger Hawkins locked in with bassist Tommy Cogbill in a way that felt less like rhythm section and more like weather.

The first session, January 24th, produced the title track and "Do Right Woman, Do Right Man." Then a fight broke out — accounts vary, but it involved Aretha's husband Ted White and trumpeter Ken Hamrick, alcohol, and things that couldn't be unsaid. The session collapsed. Hall was furious. Wexler pulled Aretha back to New York.

What he had in the can was enough.

The overdubs were completed at Atlantic's studios on West 60th Street, with arranger Arif Mardin adding strings and horns that somehow didn't soften a single edge. Engineer Tom Dowd — who had worked with Coltrane, with Ray Charles, who understood that a microphone placed correctly is an act of respect — made sure the voice stayed in front of everything. It always stays in front of everything.

The Voice Itself

"I Never Loved a Man (the Way I Love You)" opens the album and it is one of the most confident opening moves in American music. No warmup. No clearing of the throat. She arrives fully formed, singing about a man who isn't good for her with a desire so complete it functions as its own argument. Moral reasoning doesn't enter into it. You believe her immediately.

"Respect" — Otis Redding's song, which he reportedly wasn't sure about releasing to her — became something categorically different in her hands. Redding was asking. Aretha was stating. The Raelets singing the now-famous "sock it to me" breakdown were her sisters Carolyn and Erma. Family harmony used as something close to armor.

"Dr. Feelgood (Love Is a Serious Business)" is the one that still staggers me. Just Aretha at the piano, a slow blues that feels ancient and entirely present at once. She co-wrote it with her then-husband, which adds a layer of complexity that the music doesn't need and that you'll think about later, driving home.

Wexler later said he didn't produce Aretha so much as get out of her way. That's not false modesty — it's an accurate description of what the record sounds like. The arrangements serve. The band listens. And the voice goes wherever it needs to go, which is places that most voices can't locate on a map.

The album came out in March of 1967. By summer, "Respect" had become something larger than a song. But the record itself — all thirty-three minutes of it — remains the more private document. The one worth sitting with when the house is quiet.

Aretha Franklin — continued recording and performing for five more decades, became known as the Queen of Soul, received numerous lifetime achievement awards, and died of pancreatic cancer in 2018.
