Inside, it’s a dual-power-supply brute with a massive toroidal transformer, two 22,000 µF filter caps, and a fully discrete output stage. That’s 160 WPC into 8 ohms, and it’ll drive any pair of speakers — even the notoriously inefficient Apogee ribbons — without breaking a sweat. The amp section is dead quiet, with a signal-to-noise ratio that shames most modern receivers. It’s not “tube-like” — it’s accurate, powerful, and utterly unflappable.

But the real ace up its sleeve is the tuner. Kenwood stuffed a five-gang FM front end into this thing. Five gangs give you selectivity and sensitivity that rival a dedicated tuner like the KT-8300 (which is itself a legend). You can pull in weak stations that other receivers hiss at, and the stereo separation is crisp. If you live in a fringe reception area, the KR-9600 is your friend.
