The original SP-10 Mk2 (1975) and Mk3 (1981) were the gold standard for broadcast and audiophile direct-drive — the platters that ABC, NHK, and every serious DJ with institutional money ran their carts on. The Mk3 in particular became something of a cult object, with prices now routinely clearing $5,000 for a clean unit. The SP-10R is essentially Technics asking: what if we built that thing again, but correctly, with 40 more years of motor engineering behind it?
The answer is a coreless direct-drive motor — no cogging, full stop. The original Mk2's slight rotational irregularity was its one honest flaw, the thing that gave purists a reason to look at belt-drive alternatives. The SP-10R eliminates that. Beryllium-copper alloy, constrained-layer damping, 18.4 kg of acoustic isolation — it turns the SP-10R from a remarkable drive unit into a complete instrument. Budget for it. It'll push your all-in number north of six grand, but this is the kind of situation where skipping the plinth is like buying a concert grand and putting it on carpet.
The tonearm situation requires a decision. The SP-10R is a motor unit — it ships without an arm, expecting you to bring your own opinion. This is correct. People match it with everything from a Jelco 850M to a Reed 3P to an SME V, and none of those pairings are wrong. It's a professional-grade platter that takes whatever arm cartridge combination you trust.
The one honest caveat: this is a machine that reveals everything downstream of it. If your phono stage is mediocre or your cartridge is misaligned, the SP-10R will not smooth those problems over. It has no instinct for flattery. Some people buy it and hear worse initially, because the table is holding their entire chain accountable.
